"That Rug Really Tied the Room Together"

So the title of this post is a reference to one of my husband's favorite movies: The Big Lebowski.  He never misses a chance to quote a movie.  For my 30ish birthday, I decided to pick out my own gift.  This is relatively unusual for me and my husband.  Most of the time I will drop hints or take him on a window shopping trip and subtly 'admire' different items.  Not this time.  I knew exactly what I wanted - home decor.  Our living room desperately needed a rug and I knew adding one would change the space dramatically.  I have dark brown sofas and dark brown wood floors.  I need a rug to break up all those dark colors!  Unfortunately, I can't afford an oriental or oushak rug, plus my darling puppy dogs are not the most careful with my belongings.

I needed something durable, stylish and affordable.  After seeing photos of sisal and seagrass rugs over and over again in my favorite decor magazines, I decided to take the plunge, but I needed to do my research and decide which was best - sisal vs. seagrass.  One of my favorite design blogs - Cote de Texas published a fantastic post comparing the two and helped me choose seagrass.  Then I remembered a particular photo from Southern Living that had stopped me in my tracks.

The colors in this room are to die for, but it was the cowhide over the seagrass rug that captured my attention.  Beautiful, but then I would have to buy two rugs!  Hmmm, what to do...  The only thing to do would be to try it both ways and determine which was the best look!

Seagrass rug only.  Looks pretty good.

Cowhide over seagrass.  No contest.  LOVING this look!

Although the pair was twice the cost than if I had just chosen one, the combination creates depth and interest.  I'm still on the hunt for a fabulous chandelier and custom drapery, so stay tuned!
